Day 1: The Journey Begins

Start: West Wales, End: Southampton, Distance: 240 miles. One refuel: £17.41

After a year of planning I am finally on my way to Cape Town. The journey was mostly along motorways and the weather was kind to me with no rain. The bike was a little twitchy at the front end at low speeds but felt really good at high speeds. Totally the opposite of the unloaded bike. The shift in the centre of gravity from high in the middle to lower and further back is the cause. This evening i went to visit my old Scout group the 14th Eastleigh. It was great to see faces I have not seen for many years and to explain about the trip to the Cubs.

My partner Amy and her two boys followed me on this first leg because this evening we went out for a family meal with my mum, step dad, uncle Ian, youngest daughter Lucy and her partner Leigh. Tonight i am staying in a hotel with Amy and the boys.

It was good to see you at cubs last Wednesday John. Glad to see you are making good progress and looking forward to keeping track of your trip via your blog.

The cubs at the 14th are tracking your journey on our noticeboard with a map, some pins and string!

It was great to see you all again. I regret not allowing more time for my visit though. The Cubs were great with lots of interesting questions for me.
Later this week I will be leaving one continent (Europe) and entering another (Africa). Perhaps the Cubs could try to identify other continents on a map?
